Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh beach

Aldeburgh is a beautiful seaside town on Suffolk’s heritage coast, located right by a shingle beach, dotted with colourful boats and the iconic Scallop sculpture. There really is something for everyone, with an eclectic mix of family fun, music and drama, art galleries, fine dining and drinking, sailing, and shopping.

The high street has an abundance of eateries including superb pubs, cafes, restaurants, and the most amazing fish & chip shop! Aldeburgh Fish & Chips have been established since 1967 and serve across 3 locations in the town, but the Aldeburgh Fish & Chip shop at the end of the high street is the one that people queue and queue and queue for!

This historical town has many quirky buildings including the 400 year old Moot Hall, the Martello tower, and you can also catch a film at the Aldeburgh Cinema, a historic building which has been screening films since 1919. Aldeburgh was also home to composer Benjamin Britten for the final two decades of his life, and you can visit his home, The Red House, before walking along the beach to see his monument – the Scallop.

Aldeburgh hosts many fantastic events throughout the year, one not to be missed is the Aldeburgh Carnival. Thought to be at least 170 years old, this award winning carnival is typically set over 3 days and includes a music day, sports day, and the carnival day. The event brings the town together and offers a brilliant weekend of fun; including fantastic food and drink, family activities, races, a carnival procession, and finally a lantern procession which leads on to the beach ready for the spectacular firework display.

If you are feeling energetic, take a walk along the shingle beach to visit Thorpeness, which is just over 2 miles away.
