Fine country dining in a stunning historic restaurant
A real treat located in the heart of Suffolk’s picturesque countryside, close to the wool towns of Hadleigh and Lavenham and perfectly placed for visiting the Dedham Vale and Constable Country, Gainsborough’s birthplace Sudbury and historic Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, The Bildeston Crown is an original 15th century coaching inn, which was imaginatively renovated and refurbished in 2003
This restaurant and hotel is reputed to be haunted by several ghosts. There have been sightings of old people (not me!) sitting in bars, children that want to hold hands in one of the bedrooms and there’s a ghost of someone who hanged himself long ago in one of the rooms
A fabulous, small family owned and run Restaurant in Yaxley, near Eye. It was once a rural public house providing simple food and drink for locals, but now, after tasteful improvements which retain the cosiness of the historic building, it offers some of the finest food in Suffolk. And I can vouch for that!
The food, ambience and service are excellent. A real family-run place with the emphasis on quality. One of their special dining experiences is the Fruits de Mer. Sourcing the best sea food this platter can consist of Lobster, Crab, Oysters, Mussels, Crevettes, Shrimps, Prawns, Langoustine, Cray fish, Whelks, Clams and anything else that is in season. Please give them at least 24 hours’ notice if you want this dish
Suffolk Deli/ Village Stores/ Post Office
A great little deli also serving teas and coffees, Coddenham Food Store was re-opened in 2010 by Julia and Jane. They sell loads of great food and drink and try to stock as much local produce as possible.
As well as every day items such as breakfast cereals, milk etc, they have an exciting range of local bread, eggs, fruit and vegetables, as well as a wide variety of local meat and fish products. As I write I can still taste the amazing smoked ham that I just picked up, supplied by a local butcher
Wine Cellar at 745pm Restaurant
Calling all wine lovers!
My favourite place to eat in the area (possibly anywhere!) has now opened the doors to its wine cellar
As David Wicks, the owner puts it “A coat of paint and some wooden shelving and now our customers can browse the selection of wines which have been chosen from the thousands we have tasted over the last few years”
‘Farmhouse Fine Dining’
One man’s hobby that went a bit out of control! 5 course set menu served on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.45pm for just £33.50!
Absolutely fabulous food at a very reasonable price
Great country pub serving fresh local food
Rustic charm, lots of exposed timbers. Open fire for the colder weather
